Job Overview:
The automotive electrician is a highly skilled technician responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining complex electrical, electronic, and computer-controlled systems in modern vehicles. This specialist role requires expert proficiency in utilizing diagnostic software and specialized tools to resolve issues related to engine control units (ECUs), network communication (CAN bus), advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and vehicle security systems.
Key Responsibilities Advanced Diagnosis & Repair- System Diagnosis: Accurately diagnose faults within vehicle electrical systems, including lighting, ignition, charging, air conditioning controls, and power accessories, using advanced diagnostic equipment and wiring schematics.
- Complex Electronics: Troubleshoot and repair issues related to electronic control modules (ECUs/PCMs), sensor inputs, actuators, and communication errors within the vehicle network.
- ADAS/EV Systems: Specialize in the diagnosis and calibration of emerging technologies, such as Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), infotainment units, and high-voltage systems in Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Hybrids (HEVs) (if applicable).
- Wire Harness Repair: Perform precise repair, soldering, and replacement of complex wire harnesses, connectors, and terminals without causing further damage to sensitive electronic components.
- Diagnostic Documentation: Record all diagnostic steps, fault codes, repair methods, and parts used accurately on the repair order (RO) and in the dealership management system (DMS).
- Technical Communication: Interpret and utilize complex manufacturer wiring diagrams, technical service bulletins (TSBs), and diagnostic flowcharts to guide repair procedures.
- Testing & Verification: Conduct rigorous post-repair testing and road tests to confirm that the electrical fault is fully resolved and all related systems (e.g., fault codes cleared, systems initialized) are functioning correctly.
- Safety: Adhere strictly to safety protocols when working with high-voltage systems (for EVs/Hybrids) and sensitive electronic equipment.
- Self-Development: Maintain current certifications and actively pursue manufacturer training related to new electrical systems and vehicle platforms.
- Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and assistance to general service technicians regarding basic electrical testing and troubleshooting techniques.
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification or associate's degree in Automotive Electrical, Electronics Technology, or a specialized technical field.
- 2 years of dedicated experience as an automotive electrician or Diagnostic Technician in a dealership or specialized repair facility.
- ASE or equivalent international certification in Electrical/Electronic Systems is highly preferred.
- Diagnostic Mastery: Expert-level ability to isolate electrical faults (shorts, opens, high/low resistance) with minimal diagnostic time.
- Systems Thinking: Ability to understand how multiple electronic modules communicate and integrate within the vehicle network.
- Problem-Solving: Strong logical and analytical skills required to tackle intermittent or non-repeatable electrical issues.
- Detail Orientation: Meticulous attention to detail required for sensitive wiring and component replacement.
- Tool Proficiency: Mastery of specialty tools including multimeter, scope meter, breakout boxes, and soldering equipment.
