Job Description
Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care and service, seeks applicants for the positon of Archivist. Reporting to the Head of Collection Management Services, the Archivist provides reference and patron services, participates in classroom instruction and outreach, and performs organization and processing of archival, manuscript and photographic collections in the Saint Louis University Archives and Digital Services department. Responsibilities: 1. Serves as primary contact for reference and public service activities in the Archives, including creating and implementing applicable policies. 2. Promotes use of collections through classroom instruction, outreach, public presentations, tours, exhibits, and publications. 3. Accessions, appraises, and inventories newly acquired materials, and performs necessary preservation or physical preparation, or supervises student workers in these tasks. 4. Prepares, organizes, and processes archives, manuscripts, and photographic collections. 5. Creates finding guides, records, and metadata using DACS , Archives Space, and CONTENTdm, or trains and directs others in doing so. 6. With the Digital Resources Librarian, identifies and prioritizes projects and materials for digitation. 7. Oversees patron use of materials in a reading room shared with the Special Collections Rare Books division of the Library. 8. Supervises student assistants and occasional interns on assigned projects. 9. Provides service to the department, library, and University through active participation on committees, task forces, and meetings. 10. Maintains skills and knowledge of current developments in archives and the profession through active membership in professional organizations, reading the professional literature, and attending educational programs and conferences. Required Qualifications: 1. Master's degree from an ALA -accredited library and information science program, with an emphasis in archives or related field. 2. Minimum of one to two years' relevant experience in an archives or library setting. 3. Demonstrated knowledge of metadata and encoding standards, such as DACS , EAD , Dublin Core, AACR2 and RDA , as well as controlled vocabularies, such as LCSH and AAT . 4. Demonstrated knowledge of archival collection management systems such as Archives Space. 5. Ability to balance and complete multiple concurrent projects, set priorities, and work creatively in a rapidly changing environment 6. Excellent written and oral Communication skills. 7. Ability to perform tasks associated with retrieval of archival materials and to move/lift up to 50 lbs. Preferred Qualifications: 1. Second master's degree in a related field, such as American History or Theology. 2. College or University archives experience. 3. Certification as an Archivist by the Academy of Certified Archivists. 4. Knowledge of applicable domain knowledge areas, e.g., Jesuit history, Catholic history, St. Louis regional history.
