Workshop Controller

Summary The Automotive Job Controller is the central coordinator of the service workshop, responsible for managing the daily flow of all repair and maintenance jobs. This role ensures maximum technician productivity, optimizes workshop efficiency, controls work-in-progress (WIP), and maintains the quality and timely completion of all customer vehicles. The job controller acts as the operational link between the service advisors and the technicians. Key Responsibilities Workshop Management & Workflow Control Job Assignment: Review incoming repair orders (ROs) and strategically assign jobs to technicians based on their skill level, current workload, and the estimated time of repair (ETR).Scheduling: Plan and manage the workshop schedule and bay usage to maximize capacity and minimize downtime, ensuring technicians always have the next job ready.Work-in-Progress (WIP) Control: Monitor the status of every job in real-time, identifying and proactively resolving bottlenecks (e.g., delays waiting for parts, technical issues, or authorization).Efficiency Monitoring: Continuously track technician clocking accuracy, job elapsed time versus standard repair times (SRT), and overall labor utilization and efficiency. Quality Assurance & Compliance Quality Control: Conduct preliminary quality checks (QC) on completed repairs before final vehicle release to minimize comebacks and ensure adherence to manufacturer and dealership quality standards.Technical Support: Serve as the initial technical resource for technicians facing complex diagnostic or repair issues, escalating to the Technical Supervisor only when necessary.Safety: Ensure the workshop environment is kept clean, organized, and compliant with all occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations. Communication & Documentation Parts Coordination: Communicate continuously with the Parts Department to ensure the timely ordering and staging of necessary components for scheduled repairs.Service Advisor Updates: Provide timely and accurate updates to Service Advisors regarding job progress, necessary supplemental repairs, and any changes to the expected time of completion (ETC).Documentation: Ensure all technician notes, diagnostic findings, and warranty claim requirements are thoroughly and accurately documented on the repair order before invoicing. Qualifications Required Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent; Technical certification or degree in automotive technology is highly preferred.1 year of experience as a certified automotive technician, Mechanic, or diagnostic specialist.1 year of supervisory experience in a service workshop or foreman/lead technician role, demonstrating strong leadership and organizational skills.Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Required Skills & Competencies Operational Leadership: Proven ability to manage a fast-paced, high-volume service environment and motivate a team of technicians.Technical Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of modern vehicle repair, maintenance, and diagnostic procedures across multiple systems (engine, transmission, electrical).Organizational Skills: Exceptional ability to multitask, prioritize jobs, and manage complex schedules simultaneously.Communication: Clear, decisive communication skills necessary for coordinating different departments and managing technician workflows.
